It is about Nero. The book of Revelations was talking about Nero who had persecuted christians. 666 (or 616, depending on the copy) is a numerological code for Nero. The Romans were still persecuting christians. There was a common myth at the time that Nero would come back (There were even 3 different pretenders to his resurection.) Christians feared this and imagined their hero (Jesus) coming back, fighting Nero and the Romans. Much of the symbolism in Revelations fits the Roman Empire very well.

It all makes sense in light of history and acheology. But christians aren't interested in those things and would rather cobble it together with fragments of Jewish mythology and pop culture to come up with their view of the end of the world.

Try Revelation 13:18. It's actually related to the 6 days of creation, 6 thousand years till the end of the world idea. Read early Christian church father (second century) Irenaeus in Against the Heresies.

You're thinking of 616, not 656 Unique. Irenaeus explains that also.

666 is the mark of the beast, it's from revelations, in the bible
in biblical numerology, 6 is the number of man (7 is the number of perfection, so it's "not quite perfect") and things being in triplicate is supposed to mean something but i don't remember what but it's got something to do with the holy trinity and so wearing the mark of the beast, or 666, represents being in alliance with the unholy trinity, which is the devil, the antichrist and the false prophet

i saw this thing on the history channel that said when they translated it, it was translated wrong. So the real number of the beast is 656 not 666. I find that pretty hilarious

humans are carbon based life (life on earth is carbon based, meaning we are mostly made of carbon stuffs).
carbon has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons. the writers of religion couldnt have known that, so it really means nothing.

if you mean where its origin is from as in who made it, it was a bunch of fundamentalist ignorant paraniod controlling christian zealots.

but i also seen on TV (mabey discovory channel) that it was mistranlated. so it isnt 666, its 656.
