My view is that it isn't. It's a way of making yourself more attractive in that your breath won't stink when you talk to people.

I say it depends on how you're chewing the gum. If you're chewing the gum very loudly or playing with it, then it's rude. If you're chewing quietly, then it's fine. In some cases, I think people need chewing gum (or something else) in order to freshen their breath.

I find gum very pointless, annoying, and disrespectful. (Have you ever seen a cow chew its cud?) Very few people chew gum correctly. Even when they're chewing it with their mouth closed, the person next to them can hear the chewing. Some people find this rude. Why someone would want to chew on rubbery material anyway is beyond me.
I find it incredibly disgusting when a busboy or waiter is chewing gum -- spit can accidentally fly out of their mouth and into my food very easily, as gum chewing creates excess saliva in the mouth. But really, it depends on the situation. While my friends understand my gum policy (some have even stopped chewing it entirely), I know most people don't have a problem with it. It's just never appropriate in a professional environment or in a quiet library. If you're in a place where you want to be taken seriously, pop a breath mint and keep the gum out of your mouth.

It depends on the time and place, and if it's being cracked loudly and chewed like a cow, and chewed inconspicuously. At a funeral, never. Most places, sure. I wouldn't chew it on a date if I didn't know the guy very well, as some people have preconceived ideas about gum chewers. Seems some men think women who chew it look dumb. Personally, I think it's how it's chewed that can make one look clueless.

yes and no. smacking your gum while chewing it at a funeral is disrespectful. chewing gum at home in your bedroom with your friends studying respectful. chewing gum while at school reading a story or talking to anyone disrespectful. chewing gum in the hallway on your way to class and chatting with friends respectful. So I guess look at the situation and decide would I disrespect someone if I chewed gum? Then live with your decision

there isnt anything wrong with chewing gum, as long has you keep your lips closed. i would not chew gum if i were at work, in a meeting, or meeting someone face to face. therefore, if you are in a social situation i would not chew gum. but if you are just out and about with a close friend running errands, then go for it.

otherwise, use breath mints or a spray if you are worried about your breath.

It's not disrespectful but it is rude when someone is talking directly to you and your smacking on gum and making popping noises. It kinda give the impression that the conversation isn't good you don't care to hear what a person is saying.

chewing gum in front of elders is disrepectful. I believe everyone chews gum but you should never chew with your mouth open thats the reason adults give people dirty looks lol. Chewing gum is fine when you chew with your mouth closed.

no, i dont think chewing gum is disrespectful unless you are chewing loudly with your mouth open. Or if you are in a class and the professor is doing his lecture.

It can be unattractive if you are chewing with your mouth open, especially if you are talking with someone, otherwise, I don't consider it disrespectful in any way.
