First, I would give it a try in regular school with the kids - it might help get over your childs shyness & if your child seems to be withdrawling then maybe a Special Education setting would be more appropriate. What ever it takes to get your child in & through school you do - no matter what. My Granddaughter was very shy but as soon as she got with other kids in pre-school she just took off and was let's say very "un-shy" - so it really helped her out being with other kids.

The thing is this. Your shyness will fade over time, but will always be a part of you. No, it will never be completely gone. If you go into Special Ed, your self-esteem will take a nose-dive. You wouldn't think it would, but it will.

You need to choose where to place yourself based on your intellectual capabilities, not on your emotional traits. If you are smart, you need to be pushing yourself to achieve your best. If you are average, you need to be doing the best you can to at least make it into Community College. If academics are just not your skill, then you need to find out what your skill is. Maybe it is the trades, and you should consider an apprenticeship program. Regardless of anything, you can't just give up and have no education. Your self-worth will go in the toilet and you won't achieve your potential.

Look man, I am speaking from experience here. Life is not easy, and it is especially hard when you are shy, but to isolate yourself from the people your age is the WORST thing you can do. You need to find yourself a few close buddies to hang with, and stick with them until you graduate. They may not be your favorite people in the world, and maybe can't relate to you or you to them, but keep some friends around you nevertheless because it is better than being the lone wolf in school.

Also, try to realize that even though it seems really long, you may live to be 80 yrs. old or more, but you will be done with school by your 20's, so you will have 60 yrs. after that to be at peace and do as you please. Hold onto thoughts like this, never give up, and remember you are not the only person who ever felt like this!

All the best!

Special education is not for shy children. To receive special ed., your child must be tested by a school psychologist & found to have some type of learning disability. There needs to be a discrepancy between ability & achievement. Parents can request testing, but it should be for academic reasons. Perhaps you need to talk to the school counselor.

Well, it depends if they are unhappy. I had a lot of friends who were shy, and they lived. I guess they have to get over it.

Shyness can be outgrown..I wouldn't pull them out unless they really had a disability.
