Are they bad for their knees or are they bad since kids can fall down stairs or fall out of a door like a garage entry way?

I had one as a kid, but I know a lot of parents that won't use them now a days.

Doctors don't recommend them anymore because most walkers are unsafe and have been the cause of a lot of accidents and injuries for babies.

Yes, people used to use walkers to help their kids learn to walk, but nowadays it is believed that walkers actually do the contrary. When babies use walkers, their thigh and leg muscles do not get stronger because they get supported from the walker, so the walker does not help the baby learn how to walk any faster. It is better to let the child practice standing up on its own to build more muscles and strength on the hips, thighs and legs. And like what I said, walkers are dangerous - especially in a carpeted home. The child could trip and fall.

There are some walkers that are dangerous and I mean the hard plastic ones. If the baby hits the wall while in one then they hit their mouths. When my children were babies we found them bubble walkers. They loved those things. They would run into the walls and the furniture and they never got hurt. As far as them going down the stairs or falling out the doors well if people would watch their children more closely and take certain precautions then things like that wouldn't happen. With the walkers that my children had they would bounce and just have fun. I think that it helped to get their legs and knees stronger.

Walkers are safe as long as they are used correctly. Do not use a walker for a baby that can't sit up on their own. Do not leave the baby in the walker for extended periods of time. Do not let the baby sleep, drink or eat in the walker. Do not use the walker where the child could roll down-hill or down a set of stairs. Do not use the walker where they could "trip" over something, like transition strips between carpet and tile or doorways with transition strips. Do not allow the child to use other furniture like a coffee table or an end table to "pull" themselves along ... they could topple the furniture on top of them and hurt themselves. Do not let the baby use the walker unattended ... you HAVE to be in the same room with them so you can keep an eye on them.

There is a safe alternative if you don't want to or can't use a "walker" ... it looks like a walker but it has a rounded-saucer shaped bowl on the bottom instead of an open bottom with wheels. I believe it's called an "Exer-saucer". The child can sping themselves around in circles, exercise their leg muscles, and you don't have to worry about them rolling down the stairs. You still need to use them only for a child that can sit up on their own, and with you in the same the room. :)

they could nicely be risky close to stairs. it really is how over eighty 5% of walker injuries ensue. also the youngster might want to attain stuff this can be somewhat more advantageous. save something dangerous out of youngster's attain. reduce the time that the youngster is contained in the walker. Crawling/creeping is more advantageous effective for the form of gross motor skills and finally walking. Walkers can bypass quickly on hardwood or linoleum flooring. All that being reported, my own young ones used the walker and had a blast. a lot of toddler laughter. I enable them use it so that they could be entertained. They were always heavily supervised.

Walkers are not bad! They help to strengthen their legs! The only reason they say that they are dangerous is because irresponsible parents don't watch them or put up child gates and the kid falls down the stairs!!

Babies LOVE the walkers yet they are unsafe. We are VERY cautious parents but my son fell down the cellar stairs in a freak walker accident. He ended up with a fractured skull. We were ALWAYS careful but stuff happens. It is not worth the risk. The saucers are a fun alternative.
