There was no winner or loser in that war even thought American withdrew the troops from South Vietnam 1972 abandon one of its allies which was The South Vietnam government. To my knowledge, everything was planned out very carefully and were executed exactly the way it should be. The Black April, 1975 on the 30th Saigon (south Vietnam capital then) fail to the hand of North Vietnamese Government with very little casualty even with the massive force from the North while the South's task forces still almost 100% intact.
I remembered reading a Paris Match magazine date April 1975, on the front page of it there was a picture of a North Vietnamese force tank drove through the front gate of the Independent Palace (like the White House), there was a short interview given to Mr. Henry Kissinger (national Advisor then) he said...We Won.
Without the "behind the sense" planning, a lot of Vietnamese life would have been lost, I think it would be in millions.

Lost, big time. Lost so bad that the politicians had to make speeches about defeat without dishonour. Also it was not called a war until very recently. All the administrations in power during it kept denying that it was a war because it would have been illegal as war. It was a police action. And the vietnam veterans were denied benefits for a long time, only recently being declared veterans. USA lost in Cambodia also.
cokie is wrong, it was not a winnable war. USA also lost against Castro in Cuba, and are likely to lose in the middle east, wrong war, wrong reasons, wrong objectives.

First, in spit of what the good ol' Conservatives like to say, we were engaged from 1945 under Truman as advisers to the French until we pulled out. That was OVER 30 years. By the time 1968 rolled around we had been involved in that mess for over 20 years. When the "liberal" protest hit the street, they were protesting a war that was already untenable. Let's face it WWII only lasted 4 years for the US. Our Civil War was only 4 years. The Revolution was a long war at 6 years. Vietnam encompassed the administrations of both Democrats and Republicans. While our Military did exceptionally well against the forces of Vietnam, we never understood that the people of Vietnam were fighting for their self-determination. While a Communist government, the people did not care so long as the family commune (a cultural function that had been going on for thousands of years -- dating back to the first century C.E.) was left to function. The Vietnamese people did not care who was in charge so long as they were left alone. We lost 58,000 in Vietnam. VC lost over 2 million. They were simply not willing to give in, and we did not understand the dynamic going on. I can see from at least one answer that was given here, we still don't understand what was happening there.
"The Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indochina War and colloquially as Vietnam or Nam as well as the American War or Kháng chiến chống Mỹ, the Resistance War Against America in Vietnam) 1 was a conflict in which the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN, or North Vietnam) and its allies fought against the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, or South Vietnam) and its allies. North Vietnam's allies included the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. South Vietnam's allies included the United States and South Korea. US combat troops were involved from 1965 until their official withdrawal in 1973. A large number of civilian casualties resulted from the war, which ended on April 30, 1975 with the capitulation of South Vietnam."

We won all the battles, yet we lost the war. Yes, folks, we lost it, America lost it. When you fail to achieve your objective, YOU'VE LOST!
Militarily we had a great chance to win it, but we were forced to fight something of a limited war from the start. We were fighting a protracted guerrilla war that cost us some 58,000 dead soliders, but we were never allowed to attack certain objectives because we didn't want to risk drawing China into the conflict among other things. One of those things was the terrible idea of rotating solders every 12 months, you don't build cohesive units that way. In WW2 for instance, you were in for the duration.
Anyone saying we cut & run is a fool, 58,000 lives and $Billions of dollars spent over some TEN years is hardly cut & run...

It was never approached like a war! Winnable at the beginning at a great cost to the North Vietnamese if we had wanted to win. Political second guessing undermined it as usual. They actually had to wait for Comm. from the White House regarding bombing targets on a daily basis!

America loose and Vietnam loose too, the only who win in a war is the people who get profit selling arms, beside that nobody.

Unfortunaly, we lost that war. With billlions of dollar spent on that war and end up with nothing, but a shame for our country and lost a lot of our young people.
