The standard issue rifle of the US is the M16 variants, it has been the standard rifle since the Vietnam War. Other weapons were also used such as the M249 rifle, for light machine guns. And the Vietnamese use mainly the Avtomat Kalashnikov line, such as the Ak-47, a mainly used rifle, and the RPK, which is an Ak variant as a light machine gun.

During the first part of the war, the M-14 was standard issue. The M-14 is a semi-automatic rifle. It was latter replaced by the M-16. The M-16 is a much lighter rifle which is capable of operating fully automatic/

In the early days of the Vietnam war, the M-14 7.62mm rifle was the standard issue weapon. Then, under SEC-DEF McNamara, the M-16 was phased into the army as the standard issue weapon between 1966 - 1968.

M-16 on the US side, SKS and AK-47 (the real one) was VCs standard issue. They were massed produced by all Soviet Block/ Communist nations. The Chinese ones are notorious for being the worse of the lot.

US troops may have used the M-15 early on, but soldiers had the M16 then. It was followed by the M16A1 and M16A2 in later conflicts.
