Give him some Benedryl. It'll help control the swelling and allergic reaction.

My children have severe reactions to bug bites, especially fire ants. Just keep what you are doing and use the appropriate amount of Benedryl to help with the reaction.

If your son is allergic, then yes you should be concerned. He might be all right since you've said the swelling has gone down. But since we're talking about fire ants and puss, it is better to err on the side of caution.

I've heard of severe reactions to certain ant bites. As well, there are rare species of ants that are slightly poisonous, but they are super-rare I believe. Benadryl will reduce swelling, but also cause drowsiness. Yeah, if it is discharging you might take him to an ER, or just make an appointment if it isn't severely painful.

Nope, I was bitten by hundreds when I was younger (not a fun experience) and it went away in time. You're doing everything right.

I would take him to the doctor, just to be sure. It always pays to be on the cautious side when it comes to insects and kids.
