Dogs needs a lot of socialization. If he is going to be alone 8 hours every day, look into sending him to a good quality doggy daycare, or hire someone to come over to take him out and provide some company.

Well, Bigfish, as long as the dog is getting enough attention, proper care and socialization with other animals it is not being cruel.
I am sure that when you come home from work you are tired and dont want to have to deal with a hyper dog, so I would suggest maybe hiring someone to walk the dog while your gone, or someone to socialize him/her for you.
If you are consdering getting a dog and believe that this would be cruel, then maybe you need to get a pet that needs less socialization- such as a cat or a smaller animal.
Many compainion animals are placed in homes where they're owners work full-time jobs and do just fine, others not as much, so it depends on how often you are going to be able to be with the animal and how much time you can devote to a pet. Because owning pets is a full time job even if you only have one.
Again, if you have yet to purchase a dog it may be a better choice to go with a cat (not a kitten) that is already housetrained, a ferrett, hampster or bird.

Well, it's not necessary cruel to own a dog if you have a full time job, it's just better if you give it more attention than you would have. If you had an apartment room mate that wasn't working 8 hours, than you could ask them to help. Or if your job allows pets ( I doubt it but, you could give it a shot) or you could visit your dog during break (If you have enough time, like if you live close to work) or during lunch. If you think (From what I just told you) that having a dog is wrong then maybe you should consider a more independent animal that can fend for its self, like a cat! They can also be lovable at times. Or if you don't like cats, try a rodent or a reptile!

It depends on the breed, your lifestyle etc. I have always worked and had dogs. If you start out with a puppy they take alot of time and can't be left alone alot. Different breeds need more excersize and room to run. Reseach ALOT talk to other pet owners of breeds you are considering. Condsidering rescueing a grown dog. Sometimes dogs are turned in that are all ready trained and used to being alone and left all day. Make sure you have time for it after you have worked 8 hours. Do you go out alot after work? Consider time you are not home when you are not at work. Good Luck Its a life time commitment and its like getting a child to be responsible for.

I own 2 dogs and work an 8 hour day, but as soon as I get home they are all happy to see me and I let them out then I go out after a while to go play with them. I leave the back door open so they could come in and out as they please so as not to think I don't want them in the house, and occasionally I'll take them for a ride in the car. They love car rides. So even though I'm not home during the day, they know they are loved

No its not cruel, it actually depends on the type of dog you have. Some dogs are okay on their own for 8 hours a day. For instance, I have a chihuahua, I go to school part time and work part time, my husband works full time, our dog sleeps most of the day and plays with his toys while we are gone and when we get home for lunch he spends time with us and we let him out and he's fine.

I dont think so. I work 8 hours a day and we have one dog and are getting another one in three days. But you need to make sure you take care of the dog. We walk 1-2 miles everynight when i get home frome work- rain, shine, snow it doesnt matter .

I think your a dog would be fine, especially if he/she has a companion to hang out with while you're out. You may want to consider getting an older dog, as they are less hyper and need a little less attention (and do a little less damage while you're away from home!). Cats are also a good option - they sleep most of the day so while you're out they wouldn't even know it. Have fun!

no its not cruel as long as you take care of them when you do come home....or maybe you can get a sitter or something like that to spend like 2 hours with your dog while youre at work..if you live in a friendly neighborhood kids usually will want to walk your dog for like 10 bucks....but if you really arent sure think about getting a cat...they pretty much take care of themselves....or maybe a caged animal...

No I dont think its cruel if theres is somebody else who is at home while you are at work to keep the dog company.
Otherwise the dog may become destructive from being bored.
