According to some scientific study, although I could not say what my source is other than perhaps a religion teacher I once had, there was a big flood in the past somewhere in the Middle East (part of the Black Sea, I think), and it's documented in more than just the Bible's story of Noah. I think some similar phenomenon is mentioned in the Quran, but that could be wrong. Basically, what I'm saying is that there was an actual flood in the past that contributed to the development of this story.

Whatever the case, I don't think it was a flood of the entire world, nor do I think the story itself is anything more than a story meant to teach us a lesson -- a myth. I don't take the entire bible literally.

Because the "flood" is a Biblical story and if it has anything at all to do with truth, it was a localized flood. That means all of the humans that were elsewhere would have never know the flood ever happened.
The problem with fundamental religions is that they interpret the scriptures so literally that they make it impossible to believe that most of these events ever happened the way that they describe them. Give me a little geological and physical evidence and I would be willing to go halfway with this story.

It depends. I believe that if God wanted us to be here, and the ark was bad, he would have found another way for us. However, I think that he made Noah a good builder for a reason.

First of all, God was and still is in control. He wouldn't choose a lousy shipbuilder to be a shipbuilder. Not only that but He has the power to do anything (i.e. make a lousy shipbuilder, the best shipbuilder). For all we know Noah was a lousy shipbuilder, but God gave him the "blueprints," knowledge, and strength to accomplish the task.

Of all the ridiculous stories of the bible, Noah's Ark has to be the most far-flung and totally unbelievable.

Yes. If you think about the flood it couldn't have covered the entire planet. If the salt water from the ocean mixed with the relatively small amount of freshwater, then we wouldn't have any freshwater fish today.

Of course, we evolved over millions of years. It had nothing to do with a creator or an ark...
