i've had dental problems every since i can remember, several dentists have made mistakes in my mouth...and i started to hate them...and put off visiting them...and now my teeth are so bad[they're falling apart] i am ashamed of it...can anyone suggest anything that would make me fear them less...anything that would help...?

I am terrified of the dentist... I'm 42!!! I have finally found a way I can get things done.. I get intravenis (sp?) sleep dentistry done... they stick an IV in my arm.. and, although I'm awake.. I'm only semi-aware that something is being done.. I remember almost nothing of the work... 3-4 hours at a time.. I feel no pain... and even when I wake up and afterward.. the pain is bearable.. it's soooooooo much easier.... it's a little more expensive having to pay for the IV but it's worth it if you have a fear of the dentist... I highly recommend it... check with local dentists.. not everybody does it.

the very first thing i would do is
#! make an appt with the hygienist and tell the receptionsist that you are very phobic and definitely need the gas- there usually is an extra fee for the gas but in your case it is well worth it. oral sedation is not a good idea for this appt because you need to hear what they think needs to be done. besides- at this appt, they will be taking xrays and looking around. if its been a long long time since they have been cleaned, it may take more than one appt anyways. using the gas really relaxes you while you breathe it and once is turned off- you are as normal as you were when you walked in the door.
#2 at the hygiene appt. some recommedations will be suggested and you can decide what is best for you and be sure to ask about oral sedation to begin with. after awhile has past- you may feel oral sedation is not needed- but you have to get to know this office first and see how you feel.

i hate you had bad experiences. alot of times i think it is poor communication in the office- for instance- they don't tell you what or why ect and then you leave thinking they really screwed up cuz you don't understand what happened. that's how it usually is but then, there are bad apples sometimes. that is why checking the office out before treatment is done is a good idea. seeing the hygienist, getting a 2nd opinion if you think you need to. but do take care of yourself.

Personally I have had issues with the same fear. I just try to remember that if they do something wrong to the extreme, a lawsuit is probably worth the few minutes of pain. Otherwise, if they are doing everything right and there is pain... they are only helping you and doing their jobs. Dentists are not evil people, tooth pain is just one of the most severe pains you can have and most people try to avoid that at all costs. Waiting can cause you more grief though if you put it off for too long and that is your fault, not theirs.
