I thinking about getting a JVC Hard drive camcorder but I had a quick question. The camcorder has a 20 gig hard drive but it also has a slot for an SD card. Does anyone know if you have to have that SD card or is that just if you want additional storage ? Thanks bunches. Oh and I'm looking at model number GZ-MG21US If anyone has one of these I'd be so grateful to hear your input :-)

I am at work so I don't have the model number in front of me, but I do have a JVC Hard drive digital Cam Corder. I got it to tape my team's volleyball games and to use as a training tool for my personal training clients.

The SD card is just for additional storage which you really should not need. You get several hours of recording time without having to upload your files. One thing I did find - my lap top is about 4 years old and it only has a 20 GB hard Drive, so it filled up pretty quick. I had to buy a multi media external hard drive for the additional storage.

The hard part for me is finding the right type of recordable DVDs to record my movies to.

No, the SD is an option. You get about 15 minutes of HQ on a 1GB card.

I wish they would have made these with standard drives (even lap top drives) and made them removable.

You do realize you will need 20 - 30 GB of space on your computer to store this and it transfers in real time, so have 4 hours to spare when you transfer and hope you don't get drop frames!

Then you will need 5 to 10 times more space to edit and finally space to master.

While something like this works good for a wedding or long lecture, it's hard to deal with the final product.

JVC hard drive cameras make one yearn for an HD DVD or Blu-ray BURNER (currently $3,500+) so you can get all the drive on ONE DVD disk.

I can't get mine to be friendly with movie maker, but I prefer the software they gave me with mine. Just a bit of a bore having a completely new format for editing.
