A month ago my neighbors dog tried to bite me on the thigh, he jumped up and started to bite but then his owner called his name and he went home where they put him in the back yard. My dad is boiling mad that this dog jumped up on me and he says he is going to go over there and kill their lab. If he does this will we get in legal trouble..since there are no leash laws here? We dont live in the city limits and our county has no animals laws.

Yes, he'll get in trouble. It's called animal abuse.
Your neighbor needs to keep it in the fenced yard though.

If your dad is in a rage over this he needs some serious help. He needs to learn that killing an animal because of something it didn't do isn't an answer to anything. Also, do you really want to start a war with your neighbor? That's what is going to happen if your idiot dad acts out like this. Sounds like he is just as bad as the dog except the dog has an excuse - it's a dog!

Stay away from the dog and you shouldn't have problems. If it is aggressive it can be reported whether there are leash laws or not.

BTW, if the dog wanted to bite you it probably would have. I have had dogs my entire life and it has been my experience that too many people do not understand their behavior and therefore have irrational reactions. My dog goes to the dog park every night. Sometimes she finds a dog that she wants to play with and she will bow down and bark. I can't tell you how many dog owners freak out and make fools of themselves because they don't understand what is going on.

Don't overreact to the situation. It's not going to make anything better.

Anyone who owns a pet of any kind is responsible for the actions of that pet. If the owner is not a responsible person and lets the dog run free and the dog bites someone, he will have to pay for all medical bills and is subject to punitive damages as well. You should contact an animal control officer or an officer of the law and file a complaint. If this ever happens again then there is some record of the first offense and you are more likely to get some sort of satisfaction.

When you are not in the city limits you need to call the county sheriff and find out what you need to do to stop this from happening again.
Maybe the sheriff would talk to the neighbor. And let them know that if you get bite it will be a huge problem for them and that they could be sued for lots of money. And they would loose thier home insurance.
It might be considered cruelty to kill their dog so I would do some checking before your Dad gets into trouble.

Carry a very large cannister of Mace. That will subdue the dog and the dog, at least, will get the message even if the neighbor doesn't. That's not against the law. And buy the strongest type there is(mace I mean) Don't buy cheap stuff. If the dog ever bit you and you had no defense the neighbor would be breaking the law. You would then get an attorney and sue him. It would go against his homeowner's insurance and probably guarantee that he will never get another decent homeowner policy again.

you could very well be facing legal problems if your dad goes and kills someone elses dog the sherrif is right if you must go out late at night take some pepper spray or a stick with you but only use it if the dog attacks. and if i was you i would write to your town council about getting a dog control officer in place in your town

Killing the dog wont solve the problem just create another one. Try to talk to the neighbor and stress that if the dog bites some one its is the dog that loses . Yes some one will have a bite mark but what happens to the dog ? He will be put to sleep and many hard feeling are created.

document a letter of grievance and note in case you could initiate a petition to implement leash use and cleansing up after your dogs. because your neighbor shall we their canines free, you'd be accused of his messes that do not get wiped clean up. replica this positioned up that you put up and instruct it for your administration if its confusing that you need to assert what you want to at the same time as in a tense difficulty. It does ensue. the very undeniable actuality that the canines interferes with you being waiting to enter or go away the progression is a huge frustration and should be stopped. one in all the different posters suggested something about aggressive canines regulations and they are mind-blowing. you'll favor to look into that. If there is contact between the dogs and yours is on a leash then the different tenant will be a fault, no longer you. that does no longer recommend your canines does no longer be punished besides the undeniable fact that. It relies upon on the aggressive canines regulations on your progression. Your canines might want to pay the cost even if if he's on a leash if something undesirable were to ensue. Sorry about that undesirable information. only save being more advantageous careful till your administration get issues instantly with the different tenant. Use a muzzle once you deliver your canines out, then if something does ensue the wear will be minimum and convinced you need to socialize your canines to different dogs if its obtainable. do not difficulty about turning out to be that stressful neighbor. circumstances like this are those that favor to be suggested. it really is compared to you ***** about each little component, that's enormous so *****, *****, ***** or something undesirable would ensue and then you'll wish you had suggested something besides the undeniable fact that it will be to overdue. good success.

I have had similar problem. It is very important that you call animal contol immediately. If the dog is aggressive like that then there is something that can be done legally. If your dad kills the dog, then he is going to be breaking the law, not the other way around. Of course, I would feel like killing the dog too, but if he does cap it, make sure it's at night and he goes elsewhere to dispose of the remains. Good luck hun

Your dad needs to chill, and the neighbor needs to do a btter job of keeping their pet safe from harming otheres or itself. Has your dad even TRIED to to reason with the neighbor in a diplomatic way before going of the handle. Besides, killing the anmial would be up to animal control IF he did actually bite you, which it sounds like he didn't ACTUALLY do it. And yes, it would be REALLY STUPID for your dad to kill their dog.

Leash laws have nothing to do with anti-cruelty laws (which are usually state level) and destruction of other people's property. A dog is property and when that dog is killed the person who does the killing can be fined or face jail time.
