That's a myth.
It's an attempt to explain a situation by attributing it to "God's" longago and faraway (fictional) intervention. In this case it explains why Jews were cherished by God but had to abide by the laws of nature (agricultural work for food, discomfort during childbirth, etc.) It also served as a way to subjugate the female gender.
If you read Greek or Roman mythology you'll find a lot of these after-the-fact explanations for how things came to be. The brown and black skinned races of Africa and Asia are explained in Greek mythology, for example, by Phaethon borrowing Apollo's sun chariot and driving it too close to those continents, burning the skin of its inhabitants. Ancients accepted this story as absolute fact, just as now some fundamentalists accept the Eden fairytale as true.

The bigger question is why He punished Adam and Eve so severely.
This was the first and only thing they ever did wrong and God chooses to punish them and all other humans for all eternity. That's pretty harsh.
That is like spanking your child TO DEATH the first time he/she does anything wrong. Adam and Eve were like children, they were naive and ignorant. They knew only what God had taught them. God knew they would sin, yet He did nothing to stop them or teach them a better way. He just kicked them out of Eden and punished billions of humans for thousands of years. Not much of a loving forgiving and compassionate father figure.

God isn't punishing us. Adam and Eve fell from grace, and thus all their offspring are born into sin. God SAVED us by sacrificing His own son Jesus. God has perfect justice and we cannot be in His presence in our sinfulness. When we accept Jesus into our heart and "put on" Christ's righteousness, God doesn't see our sinfulness -- He sees His son Jesus.
Also, I think it's pretty arrogant to think that God should do this or shouldn't do that. He is almighty God and we are so far beneath Him we can't even begin to comprehend His reasons. He has a perfect plan, and we don't have a clue. Nobody is in the position to be giving advice to God!

God is punishing us because we broke the law. He told Adam and Eve not to eat of the fruit of the tree. They choose to go their own way. It brought sin and death into the human family. We are their offspring in which the curse that fell upon them because the curse that has fallen upon all of human kind. See Romans Chapters 1-4 in the bible.

Even from a Biblical perspective, the consequences of the sins of the father only pass to the fourth generation.
I guess that proves my great-great-grandfather was Adam.

Because Eve was the ultimate sexy little vixen.
She threw all of humanity into the throws of sin with flirting with the damned serpent.
If I get your question, you are asking why are you doomed from this sexy little vixen named Eve?
This gave us freedom and free will to make our own choices.

God isn't punishing us for what they did! Why do you think God sent Jesus to die for our Sins? It was so we could come back into a relationship with God!

God is not punishing us, he's correcting our wrongdoings just like any normal father would in order for his children to develop as good people. It's for our own good.

How is he punishing you?
God blesses my husband and I every day. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. And he is there in our time of great trouble and need.
