I like to add crumbled bacon sliced avocado and red onion to a salad and I have made croutons in a frying pan they just aren't quite as crunchy but still tasty. For a low fat dressing use a little olive oil and vinegar (balsamic if you have it)

First of all get good lettuce-I like to use Romaine. Don't cut it-rather tear the leaves into bite sized pieces. My favorite summer salad is-romaine lettuce, sliced strawberries, sliced avocado with raspberry vingerette dressing. To make home-made croutons-take some slices of bread(about 6 slices) and cut it up into small cubes. Melt about 2 sticks of margarine in a skillet on med heat-add some Greek seasoning or whatever type of seasoning you like-add the cubed bread and stir gently till most of the bread is coated. On med heat, continue cooking the bead-you want it dry and crunchy-but not burned so don't turn the heat up too high. (You can also make croutons in a toaster oven if you have one)

This really isn't answering the question but here's a salad that is NOT lettuce but cabbage. Its different and hope you like it
MEXICAN SALAD
1 avocado, ripe, peeled and diced
1/2 bunch cilantro, finely diced
1 large tomato diced
1/2 cabbage, sliced and diced
1/4 c diced celery
1/2 brown onion, diced
1 fresh jalapeno, seeds removed then diced
Mayo
salt/pepper to taste
In a large bowl - Add the cabbage, then the cilantro, tomato, celery / onion, jalapeno and a dash of salt/pepper.
Add the avocado then 2 -3 tbsp of mayo or just enough to moisten to your taste. Mix well. Chill for 1 hour and serve cold

Try adding fresh chopped cabbage; chop up like cole-slaw and add to your favorite lettuce salad.
Croutons- cut up bread into large cubes ; using italian or frenchbread. in a small mixing bowl ad 1/4 cup of olive oil or melted butter / margarine; add 1/2 tsp garlic powder, onion powder, 1/8 tsp oregon, 1/8 salt.
add cubed bread and coat - put in a frying pan at medium heat, let cubes brown and then turn when toasted. Might use a griddle too as a great flat heat source. good luck!

Add slices of tomato, slices of green and red peppers. You can also add little slices of carrots. Another way you can make croutons is by toasting bread in a toaster and then breaking it into little pieces on top of your salad or break salty crackers on top of your salad, too. You don't have to eat low fat dressing, you could just put a little bit of regular dressing or use italian dressing which goes better with your salad.

Use spinach or some other dark green leafy vegetable as the basis. Everyone is sick of iceberg lettuce! You need an oven to make croutons. Luckily they are cheap to buy. The best low fat dressings are vinaigrettes. Balsamic vinaigrette is excellent with those dark green veggies I just mentioned.

I use lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, shred. carrots, ham and hard boiled eggs. For the croutons you could use a toaster oven if you have one.Low fat dressing try a little oil and vinegar....or you could use any dressing but not on the salad instead drip your fork in the dressing then put the salad on...every bite you will have the dressing you just will not be using as much.

Asian chicken salad:
Bake one large or two small chicken breasts (you can also use leftovers from a whole chicken). Take off skin and shred.
cut up head and romaine lettuce into large cubes.
Finely chop green and/or purple cabbage and add to lettuce.
Grate carrots and zuchini, yellow squash (use largest size in box grater).
Finely cut celery at a diagonal. Cut 1/4 inch slices of red and yellow bell peppers.
Thinly slice green onion at a diagonal.
Add sliced waterchestnuts
Dressing:
In a bowl add 1/8 cup Lite Italian dressing (I use Kraft zesty italian), 1 tsp sesame oil, 2 Tbls soy sauce, 1 Tbls mirin rice vinegar, 2 Tbls honey, 1 tsp worcestershire sauce.
Cut up fresh garlic and fresh ginger into slices to put into a garlic press. Squeeze garlic and ginger into bowl (liquid drips off and scrape small pieces from press into bowl).
Taste to add salt and pepper or more honey.
Pour the dressing over the salad making sure it is well incorporated.
Next add one bag of crumbled top ramen noodles (discard that salty bag of flavorings) and sliced almonds.
Serve and enjoy!
Optional: add can of mandarin slices and toasted sesame seeds
For any salad try using sliced radishes, cucumber, waterchestnuts or nuts instead of croutons. Afterall you're looking to add crunch.

Salads can be "dressed" up so many ways. Cook up some boneless chicken breasts, let cool. Cut into small bites, add to lettuce. Then add, mushrooms, grated cheese, bacon bits, onion, and virtually any veggie you like. You can also use steak. Not sure how to do croutons.
