I have more patience than a saint. However, my mother-in-law talks ... I mean ALL the time. She can talk for 12 hours straight without coming up for air. She talks about nothing. The color of the grass and trees, the fabric on the chair she is sitting on, what someone is eating, how it is made, ... just idle stuff to hear herself talk. It seems no matter how much time you give her... she needs to talk about something else or someone else and gossip. My husband and I (we are middle age) are up to our eye balls with this non stop chatter/noise. When he is driving she talks and points her fingers in front of his face to look at something out the window... very distracting. There is no such thing as quiet time, reading time, TV time so long as she is awake.
Also, It is clear that she suffers largely from "COTU Syndrome"
Oh... that's Center of the Universe Syndrome and always needs a lot of attention.
How can we deal with this in a kind and loving yet effective way?

Oh... she goes to the Senior Center and talks everyones ear off, her husband takes the batteries out of his hearing aids just for a break and she is very self focused to the point that she could not hear you even if you did speak because all she thinks about is what she has to tell you... for the gozillionth time that is!
