I think the easiest way is to tell the guy that you would rather be friends cuz things just aren't working out. Or you can them that you are really busy so that you don't have time for a boyfriend.

The best way is to be open so that way you have no regrets later on. You should also be gentle when you let him down by saying lets just be friends or I think its best if we move on.

Just suck it all up and say it to there face this way you both can get closure and there will be more of a mutual break-up then just someone ending up avenging a personal vendetta... LOL

Tell him straight up how you feel and why you've chosen to move on-privately, and in a way that you'd want to be told. By that I mean be somewhat sensitive and don't make it hurt more than it has to, afterall he is/was your boyfriend.
