I started several years ago by joining a class. Most group classes are set up so that beginners can join at any time. Also, most classes offer mats for beginners. So, until you know if you like it, you don't need to purchase any equipment.

The best part about yoga is there are no rules on how much you have to do. At any time, if you get tired, you can rest and no one will even notice. Most people in the class have their eyes closed anyway. The instructor will tell beginners how to know when they need to rest and what positions are best for doing so.

I much prefer yoga in a class setting to yoga at home on a DVD. I have yet to find a good DVD and the instructors are usually awesome. They can answer questions, they have good music and they will let you know if your postures are incorrect.

Most YMCA's and local gyms offer group exercise schedules and most do not require a gym membership to take classes.

Good luck and happy stretching!

Take a class that is close to your house. At a convenient time. You don't need special clothes or anything. Just go and do it. Concentrate fully on the class when you are there. If you can't take a class and have to use DVDs, then set aside time and turn off the phones and do the DVDs several times a week. Get a friend to do yoga with you if possible. Don't worry if you can't bend as far as the teacher or other students, they've been doing this for probably 30 years. Just do what you can with quality. That is what is important. Just do it.

I just started my first class and it was hard. Don't over push yourself or you might pull a muscle and practice whenever you can. You can use some straps to reach your legs.
