Macs are better for art, media and creative projects. They also aren't subject to the many viruses that PCs have to deal with.
PCs are less expensive and have a wider variety of software to choose from.

Compatability is the big problem with Macs. If you want to play video games, you basically have to get a PC (or one of those Macs that can run Windows, but why bother?)
Macs do some things much better. If you plan to edit media (video, audio, etc) then you should get a Mac.
Other than those two major emphases, the two are similar enough that you could use either.

The advantages of PC's are that most software around the internet is compatable with windows and you can get cheap replacement parts for your pc from almost any electronic store. Mac's have low compatability with most software around the internet and to get replacement parts is hard to find and are expensive.

all the other answers are correct, but I'd like to add that hardware-wise, it is much easier to upgrade or change parts in a PC.
A Mac is way cleaner though (no tons of wires running around your computer), and also looks cooler.
