That's called a "sweeping generalization." I'm mentally ill and I have a home. Not everyone on the streets is mentally ill by any means. Most are just the victims of circumstances. Most americans live what is called from paycheck to paycheck (another generalization) meaning that by the time payday comes around, their broke. If they are laid off or lose their job, they can't pay the rent and they are out on the streets. While some mentally ill people are out on the street it is often because they don't like the idea of living with relatives or signing up for help with the government. Two things that might make them vulnerable, especially if they are paranoid. But good question.

A lot of mentally ill people can be self sustaining, but there is more of a push to keep them out of hospitals because there are so many of them and not enough funding to care for them... so unfortunately, there are a lot of homeless people that are mentally ill. There are a lot of programs, like group homes, out there to help take care of them...

If your talking about a slang term, then I have no clue, I live in Indiana and we're so behind on the times, slang doesn't get here for another 5 years...

So? Homeless doesn't have to do with whether they could maintain a home if they had one, it just has to do with whether or not they have one. If you don't have a home, you're homeless. And anyway, some mentally ill people do have homes.

I've personally never heard of mentally ill people being called homeless, but i know that there are many homeless people that are mentally ill. Mental illness can contribute to homelessness, in that many people don't get proper help and often lose their jobs and such. But just being mentally ill doesn't make you homeless. I know many mentally ill people who are not homeless.

They are not called homeless unless they are without a home. many mentally ill people manage just fine taking care of themselves and their homes and families. You need to research before you ask questions.

let me try to set the record straight here. first note that there are many different kinds of mental illness and not all mentally ill people are homeless.secondly, i am legally disabled (i receive ssi checks from the government) because of my mental illness), but i live in my own apartment, pay my own bills, care for my grandchild, and even drive a car. so yes, some mentally ill people can manage their own lives.
