Some of these answers are scary....Collision coverage will pay for any type of collision your vehicle has regardless of who is at fault. However, uninsured motoris coverage typically has a lower type of deductible and also has uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. So you or anyone riding in your vehicle when your vehicle is hit by someone that doesn't have insurance will have injury claims paid for. Some states uninsured motorist coverage includes rental costs for a rental car. Check with your agent and they can give you the specific benefits of UM coverage in your state. Trust me, you will want this type of coverage if it ever happens to you, and many many people drive around w/o insurance and or flee an accident scene. It will even cover you or any listed family member on your auto policy if you are hit as a pedestrian by a UM car.

Besides the fine print that some insurance companies have excluding uninsured motorist accidents to be covered under collision. If you put a claim in under collision, your insurance rate will go up. In the state of Oregon, for 3 years. uninsured motorist coverage also covers the medical bills YOU might have due to an accident (part called UMBI). If you are in a state that does not require Person Injury Protection (PIP) and you don't have good health insurance... it could get spendy quickly. Also Uninsured Motorist coverage usually comes with a deductible 2, or 300 dollars. that's usually less then the collision deductible.

Most of you are terribly misinformed. You do not need uninsured motorist, if you have collision and comprehensive coverage - period! You collision and comprehensive coverage will cover anything that happens to your vehicle - no matter who hits whom, or who is at fault.
The only benefit of having uninsured motorist coverage is... it may allow your insurance company to pay your claim without a deductible, if you have one on your collision insurance. Otherwise, you will pay the deductible and your insurance company will attempt to collect from the other party - which is unlikely, if they're uninsured.
That's it. Any answers to the contrary are either by uniformed persons, or insurance agents who want to encourage the public to carry coverage they do not really need.
Don't believe it... call you state's department of insurance, or talk to an honest insurance agent, or one who does not provide your coverage (independent should be objective, but still may not be).

Check your state law by checking with a licensed insurance agent or you may call your state department of insurance consumer help line and they can tell you which coverages are required for your state. Uninsured motorist coverage has been pretty well defined already, but you need to make sure on any coverage you carry on your vehicle or other property you have what is statutorily required and what will best suit you if your property is destroyed. Most people are over insured or under insured. Also you may want to make sure you have what you may need to cover medical expenses in the event you are in an accident that your medical insurance (if you have it) doesn't cover.

As a general rule, YES! Collision insurance pays for what YOU hit...not what might hit you. Read the fine print on your policy.

You don't need uninsured motorist insurance but it's a good thing to have. That way, if you're hit be someone without insurance you are automatically covered and your company doesn't have to worry. Coverage is not that much.

I was victim to a hit and run without having uninsured motorist. My collision insurance DID pay for repairs to my vehicle,( the police report called it a collision) however I had to pay the deductible and it would have made my policy jump, had I not been with the same insurance company for many years.

If you knew how many people driving down the road actually did not carry any insurance, you would have full coverage and uninsured motorist on every vehicle you had.
