I just checked Amtrak for overnight trips from Union Station.
There are two.

The Crescent leaves DC at 6:30 p.m. and gets into Atlanta at 8:13 the next morning.

Rent a car and go to Shenandoah National Park, where you can experience Skyline Drive, and go further south to the Blue Ridge Parkway. In southwest Virginia there's Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, which is home to Virginia's tallest mountain. Plenty to see and do.
