I have heard of chewing on a piece of gum, I would imagine any flavor, while you are cutting the onion can reduce the burning tears in someones eyes.

Swimming goggles or a painters mask will work or a candle burning close to where you peel the onion. The fumes will go to the candle.

Put on a pair of goggles. It's the vapor/juices going into your eyes. If you cover them, you wont have a problem. Contacts may help a bit, but I wear contacts and I've still burned my eyes a couple of times.

I don't think that how you cut an onion can make your eyes burn less, but I've read in cookbooks that sweeter onions, like Vidalias, will burn less than others.

You can wear goggles, but once you've cut onions a lot, your eyes get used to it.

an onion wont make your eyes water if you use a really sharp knife. duller knives just bruise the onion, but if you sharpen your knofe forst, it will slice through and not mess with your eyes.

hold it under cold water... that works for me but i also heard that if you whistle while cutting an onion, that will prevent your eyes from burning. (i haven't tried it yet.)
