They used to remove part of your brain if you were thought to be insane. It was utterly barbaric and ridiculous. If you ever get to see one flew over the cukoos nest with Jack Nicolson in it then watch it. Its very sad though.

I think you mean a lobotomy which is surgery which was performed on people who were suffering from a variety of mental illnesses or illnesses such as epilepsy. The operation was performed on the brain and the surgeon would enter the skull through the hole where one of the eyes are situated and remove the "troublesome" part and thereby alter the behaviour or symptoms. I have seen films of this "treatment".It looks scary.I am not sure how successful the results were.It seemed to alter behaviour in some. They probably didn't want any more surgery after that!

A leukotomy refers to what is now more commonly known as a prefrontal lobotomy. It consists of cutting the connections to and from, or simply destroying, the prefrontal cortex. These procedures often result in major personality changes. Leukotomies have been used in the past to treat a wide range of mental illnesses including schizophrenia, depression, and various anxiety disorders. They have even been used to "cure" communism, homosexuality, and even simple disruptive behavior.
The procedure is no longer performed, but in some areas of the world was still practiced up until the late 80's.

It is a surgical procedure that 'scrambles' the frontal lobes. I think it is no longer done. It is considered rather barbaric now. In olden days, this would be done to "help" psychotic people because they would be peaceful afterward and less upset. But also stupid because their brain was destroyed. Medical folks were trying to help but i think it was a bad idea. The people were still alive but they had no personality after the surgery. The surgeons felt they were giving relief. I think it is frontal lobotomy. Because it destroys the frontal lobes of your brain. Which is where human thinking occurs.

A prefrontal lobotomy is where they surgically remove part of the prefrontal cortex of the brain (the part that is responsible for much of the emotive personality). It was done to inhibit extreme personality disorders, and in the past was frequently used to control psychotic behaviour. No longer performed, as it's pretty barbaric, and irreversible.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

I think you spelt the word wrong! I think it should be lObotomy. I put this in wikipedia and got this:
A leukotomy refers to what is now more commonly known as a prefrontal lobotomy (Greek: leuko: white matter of brain, tomy: cutting).

I have also found a history of the lobotomy!!!

Lobotomies are surgical procedures to destroy the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. Usually to try to modify the behaviour of extremely disturbed patients. And it's pretty successful at it but they have fallen out of favour as they are irreversible and are pretty extreme in the first place. Who wants their brain mushed? And what if they find a cure some time in the future and you have squid for brains?

It's Lobotomy. Removal of the frontal lobe of the brain, used to be done to mental patients. What they did to Jack Nicholson's character, McMurphy, in the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
