Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide. It is the leading cause of liver transplant in the United States.

Hepatitis C

What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Inflammation causes soreness and swelling. Hepatitis can be caused by many things. Drinking too much alcohol, abusing drugs and taking some medicines can cause hepatitis. Many viruses can cause hepatitis, too.

There are 2 main kinds of hepatitis, acute hepatitis and chronic hepatitis. When a person has hepatitis, the liver may become inflamed very suddenly. This is called acute hepatitis. If you have acute hepatitis, you might have nausea, vomiting, fever and body aches. Or you may not have any symptoms. Most people get over the acute inflammation in a few days or a few weeks. Sometimes, however, the inflammation doesn't go away. When the inflammation doesn't go away, the person has chronic hepatitis.

I know that it depends on how long you wait to find out determines how bad the treatment can be. There are different degrees. My moms best friend got it through working with kids (obviously not through sex!!) and her treatment has been horrendous!! She has to give herself shots every other day that make her sick. She has to be on the medication for almost a year and she doesn't feel well a lot of the time. The doctor told her that as a result with the treatment, she is going to lose a lot of weight and possibly some hair. The treatment starts off fine but you get sicker the more you take it in til you beat it. On the other hand my brother and law got it and his treatment isnt as bad because his red blood count is higher. He found out sooner so he takes his shots once a week!! Hope you don't have it and if you are suspicious then you should definitely get checked out.

Hepatitis C is a liver disease that is caused by infection with the hepatitis C virus. The virus lives in the liver cells and causes the liver to become inflamed. In time, hepatitis C can lead to permanent liver damage as well as cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure.
