I have heard that it is harmful/ not good for people to drink gatorade when they are not physically active and it has something to do with electrolytes or something to that effect.

It's bad to drink gatorade or other energy drinks unless you are physically active for a couple of reasons.

The first one is electrolyte balance. Your body needs to maintain a specific balance of electrolytes to ensure your muscles and nerves still work. If these electrolytes get unbalanced, it can cause muscle spasms and cramps, nerve problems, pain, and most importantly, it can stop your heart.

Finally, the gatorade or other energy drinks are full of kilojoules (Energy) and unless you are using energy, there is no reason to drink it in the amounts contained in these drinks.

Energy drinks are designed to replace what you lose through heavy physical activity and sweating. If you arent doing this, it's far better for you to just drink water.

Gatorade just has a lot of sugar and sodium that you don't need if you aren't working out for longer than an hour. It's just better to drink water unless you actually need the extra sugar and sodium. However, Gatorade isn't really bad for you compared to sodas and some other drinks. Water is just better for you unless you are very active.

Gatorade is used by athletes and marathon runners because it not only replaces electrolytes but it also shuts down the kidneys, which is why marathon runners start to drink gatorade diluted with water so that their kidneys will start to function again and release all that fluid. That is why water is the best thing if you are not physically active. Which is why if my kids or myself are sick and need to replace electrolytes I usually buy pedia lyte popsicles, they taste just like popsicles.

Ehh, yes and no.

When you exercise, you lose electrolytes and NATURAL sugars.
The gatorade Rehydrates you and refreshed the electrolytes

It's not that it's bad for you, it's just a little extra sugar. It's MUCH better than any other drink though (except water and juices)

"it also shuts down the kidneys"
This person does not have a CLUE!! Complete fabrication.

Gatorade is not "bad" for you if you're not active. It is designed to replenish fluids, electrolytes, and energy in athletes. It has less sugar than (regular) sodas. If you like it, go ahead and drink it.

ive read in Men's Health magazines and other health mags that sugar makes you gain weight. Gatorade has lots of sugar in it. If you still wish to drink it, water it down to dilute the sugar.

It is very high in sugar and calories. If you don't need it, it is just a waste of calories. Drink something with less sugar like water.

Probably because it has so many calories from sugar. It will make you fat if you aren't using up the calories.
