Of course everyone has a different definition of best. I used to travel quite a bit for business. My idea of best is easy to get to and from, easy to find your way around once inside, short lines at security, ability to walk to your rental car as opposed to take a bus, nice shops or restaurants or food court. My favorite in the US is, believe it or not, Pittsburgh. San Diego is only five minutes from downtown. Orange County is nice. DFW is big and confusing but has nice shops and restaurants. Many people hate O'Hare, but it is home for me so I like it.

LAX can be tough to get to since it is not on a highway. Miami is very confusing. I have never NOT been delayed at Atlanta.

Whatever you do, avoid Madrid! Don't get me started.

Burbank is a great alternative to LAX, it is small and conveniently located, not too crowded. It's older looking, but they are renovating a little, plus it still has the charm of being such a small airport that you get to walk on the jet way and take stairs up to the plane, which means you can conveniently board from front and back.
Phoenix is up and coming, very clean.
Seattle is big, which makes it kind of confusing, but also offers lots of things to keep you occupied.
Those are the three I've been to most recently.

Detroit is the worst. Seattle is difficult. McCarran (Las Vegas) is great because you can always play slots while you wait & if you are visiting the Strip the taxi ride is pretty cheap. I think the best airports are the smaller ones since they are much more convenient. Since I have children, I take that into consideration - I think the best airports for children are Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, & Las Vegas.

I like LAX. The driving is a pain, but every few gates have their own security to expedite the process.

I LOVE John Wayne as well, small (15 gates) and easy!

I hate Las Vegas (well, during their long term construction at least) and Detroit.

BWI is my favorite airport. Chicago Midway is nice as well. Chicago O'hare is horrible, and Atlanta is even worse. Everything else in my opinion falls between those airports.

Detriot is really yucky, so is Chicago Midway. Tampa Bay has a nice airport, so does Denver.

Washington Dulles is massive, yet still manages to make you feel like you are in a sardine can. Signposting is poor and the layout is cumbersome and confusing.

Nashville is one of the best.
Detroit Metro is one of the worst.
