Depends on your own point of view. My brother has lived there on and off for the past 7 years and he is currently trying to get back there again to live for good. I've been there and although it is an incredible place to visit, I myself could not live there due to "island fever."

Yes. It's true that it's better to visit than to live there mainly because housing is very expensive and limited there. Most studio apartments there rent for at least $900/mth or above. It's hard to find any studios less than that rent. Just go to http://www.craigslist.org and check out the prices there, then you will know what I am talking. You can find a few maybe less than $900/mth but those are kind of rare and very very few and there can be many people interested in just one studio. There are many shared housing situations which is cheaper. I couldn't stand the expensive housing in Hawaii so I moved to another state. I was very glad that I moved and wished I had moved to this other state earlier because the housing is cheaper and nicer and there are many more selections. I think in Hawaii, you may be paying a high rent for something that may not be very nice or even worth the price. They have studios that are only 150 sq ft. and the rent is $750/mth. Other than the expensive housing, the weather is very nice and the nature and beaches are beautiful. The people are friendly with the Aloha Spirit. Parking is a problem in the downtown area as there are not that many big open spaces for parking. I think Hawaii is over-priced because it is just an island and yet it is one of the most expensive places in the U.S. But, that's just my opinon. Some people like that, some people don't. So, it's good to go there and visit if you haven't been there yet. But, the housing is really expensive and limited there. For people who care about getting their money's worth, that may not be a good place for them.

I am born & raised in Hawaii 16 yrs on Maui &29 yrs. on Oahu. I read all of the replys & many were right but I wouldn't suggest you to go where they went. Maui is the best. Lanai & Molokai are beautiful. Kauai is magnificent. The big island is great but spread out (some of the best waterfalls & the superbowl of big game fishing ) & Oahu is also beautiful but the people in the responses were in only Waikiki. Waikiki is only 3 miles of Oahu. How can you judge anyplace by only 3 miles ? Hawaii is one of the best & diverse places in the world. 8 major islands & every island has 100's of incredible spots & things to do.I don't even leave the state anymore I just go island hopping! Aloha, Have fun

Yes. And here is why.... Hawaii only has about 4 blocks of beauty and resort. The reason it is rated so high is because in order to get there you have to travel by plane. It is out of the way in normal life and although they have great tourist 'traps' they have a large problem with homelessness and crime. The kicker is that most Hawaiian hate outsiders and are very unfriendly

No, it is not over rated. Hawaii really is a wonderful place. And, yes, it is expensive.
Unfortunately, you have been talking to a segment of the population that is negative. Talk to positive people to get positive answers.
It is not true that it is better to visit here than to live here. But, like other places, it is more fun to be on vacation here than it is to work. :)

I went to Hawaii for a family trip, and Honolulu is nice, but it's VERY busy. My dad and I tried to get on the beach, but there were SO many people. I wouldn't reccomend going there.
If you want to visit Hawaii, try going to the island of Kona or Maui. Maui was a VERY beautiful place, and Kona is pretty nice, also.

I have nevered lived in Hawaii but i have traveled there a few times. For me the trips have been worth it because the pace of life there seems to infect you in away that encourages you to slow down, relax & get recentered. The weather is always great even in the rainy season & I do get some siteseeing in & have never been disappointed.

It depends on your situation and what you like. For example, if you are a recent college graduate who really wants to get far far away from his interfering, controlling and warring divorced parents and set up an independent and relaxed life, then it can be a very nice place to be for a while.
It's expensive, but friendly and a nice place. Get a job as a bartender for a while and you may just find another job in your area of specialty.
I heard that if you are a guy, you should like Asian chicks.

No matter where you go in the world, the people who live there don't appreciate the beauty of what they have. Hawaiian residents also have an ulterior motive in wanting to keep tourists away. Hawaii is to me the most wonderful place on earth.

Over-rated in what aspects? I've been there (Maui) a few times, and it's great fun. If you go inland things are a bit less expensive, but everything there is _MORE_ expensive. If you get the chance, go. Enjoy the weather, the sun, the rain (mist or storms). Take home some Kona coffee. Go to Cheeseburger in Paradise. Just take your sunscreen.
