do you want a real mai tai? if so, please ignore all of the above responses. a real mai tai should NEVER have pineapple juice or grenadine in it. approximately 95% of bars out there make it wrong.

Here's the tried and true formula for a Mai Tai as served at Trader Vics. (who is the guy who made up this drink, and it is still happily served at Trader Vic's)

1 1/2oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2oz. curacao
1/4oz. orgeat syrup
1/4oz. rock candy syrup
1oz. Jamaican rum (I use Myers)
1oz. Martinique rum (I use Mt. Gay)

Mix together in a glass with crushed ice and the spent lime shell. If you want to go the distance, garnish with a fresh mint sprig.

Take from ehow site (see link below!):

Reportedly invented by Trader Vic restaurant founder Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron in 1944, the Mai Tai is the quintessential tropical drink. Serves 1.

Ingredients:

1 oz. dark rum
¾ oz. triple sec
½ oz. amaretto
1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
¼ oz. lime juice
splash of club soda
splash of grenadine
cracked ice

Steps:
1. Put cracked or shaved ice into a cocktail shaker.
2. Add rum, Triple Sec, amaretto and juices.
3. Shake 4 times.
4. Strain into an old-fashioned glass.
5. Top with a splash of soda and a dash of grenadine.
