I'm looking to get a new digital camera in the range of $300-$450, possibly lower if the camera has better value. Any recommendations or things to shy away from? I'm currently eying a Canon, Olympus, Casio, possibly HP, but open to anything.

I wouldn't go near HP anymore.

Olympus is good, but the cards cost more than the Canon or Casio.

Casio was good and reliable, but they stopped using Pentax lenses.

Gee, this may mean the Canon is the best bet. Canon makes good lenses, uses an SD card for economy and is a very reliable camera.

The Kodak Z650 or P850 both are very good and in this price range, but they are big and bulky, of course the Canon S2 is in this price range and is like the Z650 or P850 and while you are at it look at the Sony H2 if you want a big size, big zoom camera, it has a Zeiss Tessar lens and is priced same as the Canon.

Also there is the smaller, new V570, A610 and A603 from Kodak/Schnieder. Small, light, good lenses. The A610 has 10x zoom at small size.

You can go for broke and at least go to the Nikon SLR, I think they have a D50 or D60 priced around $600 if you look hard.

The Canon REBEL XT is priced at $650 if you look hard.

These cameras are in a much better class! 32 bit color not 24 bit, RAW and JPEG storage, interchanable lenses.

If you don't mind a little bigger size, the Canon S3 IS, Sony H5, and Panasonic FZ30 are $400 to $500 depending where you buy, and all have:

12x zooms, with Image Stabilization
6-8 megapixels
2 in to 3 in screens
Full automatic and manual controls
Great reviews

These are all great upgrade cameras. But the large zoom makes them bigger than the average digicam.

Last year's models (Canon S2 IS, Sony H1, Panasonic FZ20) are still available for about $100 less. I have the Sony H1 and am very happy with it.

Nikon's are the best. You should be able to fit a 5MP camera in about the range your looking for. Under no circumstances do you use the digital zoom however. You will distort your pix like mad.

I just got a canon 550. I have not used it very much, but what I have used I have been impressed! Especially with videos shot inside the house.

Kodak z650. It has 6.1megapixel, 10x carl zeiss optical zoom (very important), and is less than $300. I have one and it takes amazing pictures.

Yeah, you always want to stay away from those good, reliable name brands.
