My first question. I have had my cat now for about 5 years.I treat her like a queen. She seems to be getting more and more scared of everything. There is constantly food on the floor from this. She constantly stares at the windows. Why is this happening?

Cats have better hearing than us.
But possibly your cat, as she gets older, could be losing some of her's and when she hears a noise, she thinks it will come after her.

If she is constantly staring out the windows, it could be birds, or she is hearing noises out there too.

Sounds like she has a cat that is visiting and hanging around outside the window. Odds are, it's a male tom. Go walk outside and see if you can spot signs of where he may be spraying the under or around the window, that will tell you that there is one out there somewhere. If ths is a real change in personality and you don't see any reason for a cause, you may want to consult the vet and have her get a health check. They don't have a way to tell us that everything isn't okay, so odd behavior, could be her way of getting your attention regarding something else.

It's possible the cat lost in a fight to another. This is likely if your cat refuses to go outside. Of course, if it is kept inside this can't be the case. At any rate, it's probably just scared of something. Unless it was like this for a long time or is kept inside, I would say it was a fight. This sort of thing usually happens with fear of other cats.

Haha, sounds like the symptoms of alien abduction... Maybe there's someone who kicks her when you're not looking, or perhaps there are some animals or birds outside that scare her?

The spirit thing mentioned above - as far-fetched as it may sound, it's possible. My aunt's cat and my boyfriend's dog act strangely sometimes, but they are sure that it's because of spirits in their house (from their own experiences too).

The best answer I can give you is that every breed of cat has a different type of personality. Some are scared and hide from others, some are people oriented cats ect....

She's probably watching the birds. They will taunt a cat from outside the windows. Some cats are also just really high strung.

Might be a noisy environment.
Or you scare the cat while listening loud music in the house.
Or outside the house - traffic noise, honks?

Since a cat has 9 lives maybe she is down to her last few. Or maybe she is just a scaredy cat.

Maybe she sees something outside. Another cat maybe, or maybe there's someone outside that goes by sometimes and does things to her. Maybe even a dog?
