Parmigiano-Reggiano is a "grana", a hard, grainy cheese, cooked but not pressed, named after the producing areas of Parma and Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is widely described by connoisseurs as the king of cheeses. Cheeses resembling Parmigiano-Reggiano but not made in this area are known as parmesan cheese.

They're completely different cheeses. It's akin to asking the difference between Mozerella cheese and Chedder cheese. They're made using different methods and originate in different areas. Mozerella originated near Naples whereas Parmesan originated in Parma, Italy.

parm is a harder salty cheese. mozarella is a soft mild cheese. If you want a strech to a dish the mozarella is a great bet.

Parma has more flavor, its salter
Mozarella is less flavorful cheese.
If you need to use a universal cheese, than mozarella is good. But parma is more for a particular flavor you're seeking from you're meal. I usually prefer parma over mozarella.

If you've ever had takeout pizza. Parmasan is a bit like the salty yellowish stuff that comes with the pizza ,in the packets (Not the red pepper packets) and mozzerella is what is on top of the pizza.

mozarella cheese is more expensive usually.. and tastes alot better in my opinion.
