I highly recommend a Japanese company's plastic worms _ Yakohama Brand, in black (for clear water) r blue (for murky water) I swera, whether it is the scent or color, or whatever - you will get a hit within 10 seconds of the cast - if a bass is near it.
It depends on if you use a spinner or bait caster. Personally, when using my spinner (90%) of the time - I let the cast set, then reel 2 rotations at a time, with a slight 1-2 second delay, then repeat until it is back to you. With a bait caster I use a cnstant spinning, jerking motion.

FYI - The largest bass I ever caught was 5 feet froma shoreline, after feeling dejected and reeling in my line. It took my by surprise - but at 12 Pounds, 28 inches - I was a happy camper.

I've had great success using a "jig" type retrieve. Every three turns or so I set the rod tip back a little bit then let the worm sink a little bit before resuming my retrieve. I like solid colors in murky water and more translucent jigs such as chartreuse on sunny days. I'm kind of old school; I like non scented mister twister with lead jig heads.

I would real it in kind of briskly but not so much as to make it difficult for them to catch. In clear water I'd go with a purple or red and in murkey water I'd go for a bright green with the metalic flake look.
