A professional driver is paid for driving. But proficient at racing, for example? Many years. Professional racers also are very highly trained, with at least an SCCA Certification--and preferably some experience with the more high-end performance driving schools. F1 drivers are even more stringently schooled.

An SCCA license, by the way, costs about $7,000 at the end of classes and licensing fees. I think Ferrari has easily spent ten times that on Michael Shumacher.

The only way to actually be considered a profesional driver is to drive for a job. I am a profesional driver because I delivered food, I drove a Taxi Cab, and a limosine. (I am talking to between 8 and 16 hours a day behind the wheel. That is profesional)

However The more driving you do the more skilled you become, and you can be a highly skilled driver in as little as 4 or 5 years. The problem with this is that with youth comes thrill seeking, and lack of comon sence. and this is why teen drivers have the highest accident related fatality rate as drivers.

Just try to be the safest driver you can and watch out for the real idiots out there and you are a pro in my book.
