Ok, my husband has this cat that he's had since he was atleast 6. That makes this cat upwards of 19 right now. When we moved in together, his parents didn't let us take her (thinking she was too old and the car ride alone would kill her). After 6 months, his parents were so fed up with her urinating every where but her litter box they made us take her. That was a year ago. Now, we have tried every kind of litter and litter box under the sun. It's like she doesn't realize she's a cat and is too good to use the box. Half the time, she urinates on the carpet (we put plastic bags and paper down in the area she frequents) and maybe once a week she'll poop on the mat by the door. Is there anything else we can try to keep her deterred from the carpet? We've tried chemicals/spray that are supoosed to work, but they don't. PS- we also took her to the vet to check for infections or kidney degeneration and she's in tip top shape. HELP!!

FORGOT TO MENTION: this is the only cat in this house (I don't care for them personally). When she was with his family (the first 18 years) she was the only indoor cat. She was the only one to use her litter box unless they brought some of their outdoor cats inside (cold weather or what not) and if they used her box she wouldn't go near it unless it had been throughly cleaned out. If you saw her- you wouldn't know she was 19. No arthritis, perfect eye sight, pefectly healthy cat. She's just stubborn.

I have a cat that is much younger(who now lives outside on a farm)who also had litter box troubles. She would use it some days and then somedays she only pee'd and poo'd anywhere but the litter box. The final event that sent her to be outside only was she pee'd right in middle of my bed!!! She is great cat other than that.

I think these things happen with age, 19 is SUPER old for a cat. If this is the reason then I dont think there is anything you can do to stop her from doing it. I think you should just keep her comfortable because she may soon be seeing the end of her days. I hope things work out.
