Most commonly used word is "Qila". Like the Qila of Samir. A qila usually consists of a protective boundary wall (in old times to protect against invading armies), separate quarters for the army personnel and the monarchy and their private bedrooms. Throughout India and Pakistan some of the largest QILAs were built by Mogul emperors (1526 - 1857 A.D). As compared to palace (MAHAL) the basic difference was that qila was mainly for military purposes.
