When you file the police report, give as thorough a description as possible, including any kind of identifying marks, serial numbers, its value, etc.,

No, you actually have a year to report something like that when it comes to the insurance. I'm not sure about police. However, the longer you wait, the more suspicous it looks. I'd report it now if I were you.

no maybe, when did you notice it was gone, and why did you not call the police. If you have a good reason, the police may not come out to you to take a report, they may take it over the phone or make you go to the station house.
