Why not let them marry?

Conservative fundamentalists say they are "defending" marriage by banning gay marriage. Defending it from what? How does the fact that Adam and Steve have committed themselves to each other harm them? Does it increase the chance that they will commit adultery, or beat their spouse? Not likely, I think.

IMHO, they think this violates their religious beliefs. And they think that their opinions should of course have the force of law. But the fundies realize that as soon as they introduce religion into this issue, they will lose. "Freedom of religion" also means "Freedom from religion", meaning that a person doesn't have to acknowledge any religion whatsoever. And once you knock that leg out from under their argument, they have no argument left except to sputter with moral indignation.

This issue looks a lot like the civil rights and racial events of the 50's and 60's. And it will play out the same. More and more cities, states, countries, etc will start guaranteeing more gay rights. States that have enacted bans on gay marriage will repeal them.

Gay Marriage: Marriage is a religious sacrament of specific religious institutions. This is true of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Wicca (though it is referred to as Handfasting), Hinduism and many of the world's religious expressions. It is not specifically an institution of the State. It is recognized by the state for various reasons, but it is not specific to a given state. The issue of Gay Marriage is complicated since we are not a Christian Nation, and as a secular nation of laws, need to approach this issue with care for all involved. The establishment of a Civil Union is the current concession to this minority's need. It is a suitable one within the parameters of our era. It separates the ecumenical from the secular but allows for the recognition by the individual states of both types of partnership unions. If anything the laws governing Civil Union need to be examined to make sure that the minority, which needs such protection and recognition, have parity and equity, to those who have the option of the ecumenical recognition and sanction. Gay Civil Union is no threat to the Sacrament of Marriage.

If a given religious institution should not wish to recognize the Civil Union due to its own sacred dogma, then that is between the institution and their God. No one should dictate what a given religious expression should do. However, the United States of America is not a religious institution; it is not a Christian Theocracy. The wellbeing of all its citizens needs to be accommodated. The Gay and Lesbian community are a very small minority in this nation, and their rights need to be upheld and protected.

Gay people should be allowed to get married. The only reasons I have heard for them not to is clocked in religion. Lets not forget this country was founded on separation of church and state. So if your against gay marriage mind your own business.

This wasn't meant towards you but i get very annoyed by the chronic ignorance of the homophobic community.

I don't understand why anyone who thinks that gay marriage is wrong is a redneck or hillbillies or a Christian.

I don't think that gay marriage is right because a p*nis was not meant for an a** hole and two v*ginas don't fit together. It's like a puzzle you can't fit a square peg into a round hole.

I agree with you stupid.liberals. Can you close two identical pan covers? NOPE. You need the pan cover and the actual pan in order to get a perfectly shut PAN.

Butts were made to pass faeces and fart. Penises were made to go inside vaginas. Two vaginas don't work together and two penises don't work together. Why do you think lesbians use dildos? Why do you thinks gays use the butt hole? All in the name of substitution. PEOPLE WHEN WILL YOU GET THE POINT, there is nothing like the real thing! NO SUBSTITUTES!!!

Should be legal everywhere.

As long as there are two consenting adults involved, the government has no place to tell people who they can or cant be married to.
