I read that carbs and proteins compete for absorption, but if you only eat one or the other for each meal, which one is more important for right after a workout?

You should eat protein 1 hour before you workout and right after you work out. It could be chicken, a shake, or a protein bar.

I say protein.
When you eat after a workout make sure it is high in protein,
and it includes carbohydrates and some fat.
Read a good body building magazine.
You will learn eventually.

Carbohydrates...why you ask?
When you exersize, your body is using carbohydrates (CHO), for energy. As you use your muscles during your workout, the stored glycogen, CHO, in you muscles is being utilized. Carbohydrates is you bodies main source of energy...SO, after your workout you need to replace the glycogen stores in your muscles which is carbohydrates. Your muscle will have no energy to repair itself if you don't have carbohydrates.
Protein is essential for cell growth, in your case muscle mass? Right? We eat enough protein in out diets that any protein that is not utilized in the body , we pee out. The protein molecule is almost imposible to store as fat, so we just pee it out.
