An agnostic is someone who doesn't know whether there is or is not a God. An atheist is someone who says there is no God.

In college I had a classmate who's father died. I asked him about his father's belief in God and then his. He said that his father was an atheist. He said that he was an agnostic, he didn't know if there was or was not a God. This was a very long time ago (1970). I do not know what he believes now.

Then there is my brother. His wife is a Christian. He played the game of Church when the children were growing up. He even was a leader in the church. He confided in me one day when we went to see the movie ,Raiders of the Lost Ark, back in the 1980's that he didn't know whether there was or was not a God (an agnostic). I really don't know what he believes now.

The agnostics are a group of people that originated a few centuries back. Their philosophy has to do with knowledge. If they have knowledge, then they can find the true path in life. They discount the existence of God and instead rely on their own capacity to be and do according to their knowledge that leads to enlightment. In other words, unless you have this "special" knowledge, you cannot be enlightened. Some examples of agnostics today are atheists, the church of Scientology, and others like them.
Mr. M on agnostics.
