one of my tutors told me that getting straight a's in regular classes is better than honors/ap but you should take ap/honors if you want to challenge yourself because it will prepare you in college...?

It really goes both ways. You don't want to take advanced courses and nearly flunk out of school. That never looks good. At the same time, just taking easy courses and having a 4.0 GPA before college doesn't prepare you for the courseload you're going to have to do. Colleges want to see those harder courses b/c it shows a lot about you, including intelligence, responsiblity, and maturity.

It all comes down to how much drive you have. College doesn't mean anything unless you can apply what you have learned when you get out. I say take ap/honors because you want to, and if you want to bad enough you'll ace it. Be a leader and get A's or ap/honors because it's what you need to do to get where you want to go, not because you're following someone else's idea of what best for you.

Getting OK grades in honors/AP classes are more important,i think. B's in honors classes are about equal to B's in regular classes.

I have always heard that it is better to take the most difficult classes you can handle. Your college applications will look better with AP courses taken and you will have a jumpstart on completing college level courses while in high school.

Your tutor is correct. Unless you are doing well in an AP class, I would recommend getting all A's in regular classes.
