I leave placemats on my breakfast bar, my nook and dining table all of the time. My nook and dining tables also have chargers, napkins and a runner or table scarf. I change them seasonally and like the finished decorator look that compliments each room's decor. I guess that is why most people who visit my home say it looks like a page out of a magazine or a model home!

The placemats are always on my large dining room table. I also leave them on the table in my breakfast area where most meals are eaten, but they get washed often. So they're half on, half off.
Bring the season inside for decoration on your table. Use in season fruits or vegetables in a nice bowl. It makes it edible and you can always change it just by going to the grocery store.

Personally, I don't like placemats, so I don't use them. I like to have things clutter free. For me our kitchen table has a large wooden black bowl that we keep fruit in for easy access for our kids. Our dining room table has throw that is draped on the table with a large round pot in the middle that has zebra feathers, sticks and greenery coming out of the top, it is fairly large so it makes a statement on it's own. Check out Gordman's or Kirklands for items to try this with, even Hobby Lobby has some great ceramic pieces.

The placemats are only on the table when it is time to eat. The bowl of fruit is on the table all the time.

Placemats should be removed from the table following the meal. As a decoration, you might consider a small, not too tall, easy-to-care-for plant, placed in a decorative basket.

This sounds so good right now. Go ahead and put out the placemats, then small plate/silverware and center the table with a cake in a container. yummy

Some sort of candle decoration or a large bowl with decorative accents in it, depending on your decor...what type of decor do you have?
I don't leave the placemats on the table, they are only there during dinner.
