The stars for the hotel describes the popularity, cleanliness, and service of the hotel. 3's okay, 5's good and 7's perfect.

Most ratings systems stop at 4 or 5 stars. You also want to find out the basis for giving stars from the source you are using. 4 stars from Expedia might be 2.5 or 3 from Michelin or AAA. But, typically here's what I find the stars to mean:
* - Adequate for sleeping. No frills. Key Card locks, Telephone, TV, Bed, Shower. (Motel 6 or lower)
** - Adequate for sleeping with a few frills. Perhaps a larger room, better toiletries, nicer decor, safer feel. Somewhat nice lobby and a feeling leaning towards comfort. (Comfort Inn, Quality Inn)
*** - Larger lobby, with added frills. Bellhop, concierge, and a large front desk with professionally dressed clerks. Usually has a restaurant on site, the rooms are nicely decorated, and you have a touch of luxury around you. (Sheraton, some Clarions, Hilton, Hyatt)
**** - More luxurious still. May have spa onsite, 24 hour room service, and a staff that responds quickly to needs and concerns. Expect more bells & whistles like maps, umbrellas, bathrobes, upgraded toiletries, more expensive furniture and amenities in the room. (Many Westins, Grand Hyatt, Le Meridien)
***** - Luxury Hotel. Staff will cater to ANY of your needs, whether it's personal shopping, an on demand car service, or even 'fetching' something from a local store. Decor should be top notch with fabulous amenities and lobby is typically ornate & extravagant. Staff seems to have gone to finishing schools - many luxury hotels even have butlers that will check on you. Anything you want, they have or can get for you. Usually in desirable locations with views. (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons)
Now, these ratings are for the US only. European ratings tend to run higher, so you generally remove one star from anything 4 stars and below to get it closer to US standards.
