I am an American born and raised...and I am so embarrassed when I go overseas and see how most of us (myself NOT included...I have pride in myself) look like slobs. I was in Paris last year, in a nice little cafe with my husband...a few tables away was another US couple. The man had on dirty jeans, dirty sneakers and a t-shirt that he'd cut the sleves off of. He also had on a bud light cap, which he didn't even take off inside. The woman had on a mini skirt and midriff top, both about two sizes too small. I've also been to Amersterdam, London and St. Croix and seen similar things....
What's wrong with people?

And before anyone says anything about the couple in Paris being "redneck"....they were from NYC. We asked them.

If you dress like this you have no pride in yourself. Or you are lazy. No other reason.

Lack of pride and lack of self esteem. They want to prove they can "do what they want" to the point where they make themselves look like idiots.

Americans as a whole are idiots. You spoke of two of them earlier. As an American who has served in the US Army for 5 years I can say I have met many people and many cultures. Americans for the most part has no identity. The main reason for that is we are a very young country that does not have any culture of its own. We have been around for about 270 years. I know that we declared our independence 130 years ago on July 4, 2006. When that is compared to Europe, who has been a civilized nation for centuries(more than 2), we are just young. We are lazy too. We like Fast food, how many people get irritated when McDonald's makes us pull forward and have to wait three minutes. We like jogging pants, even when we are not at the gym. Taking into consideration all of these facts and many I have not mentioned I must conclude that we are fat, lazy teenagers with an attitude.

I understand the issue of freedom and being allowed to do/wear/say what you want, but really people, I wonder if there is a shortage of mirrors. Sure women want to look slutty, oops, I mean "sexy", look at what the "celebrities" are wearing! And as far as men and the baggy pants 16 sizes too big for you and the t-shirt/trucker hat look, come on guys. No one wants to see your *** hanging out of your pants, no matter how "pretty" your boxers are. I feel that youth (and I am not old) have no respect for themselves let alone anyone else. The clothing just reflects that. Not that older people are better dressers, but if your older and dressed dirtily we just assume senility has set in a smile and nod at you. ;) So in answer to your question, lack of respect combined with no jobs, (because unless they are movie stars/musicians/strippers/porn stars, no one is going to hire them) is most likely the answer. So maybe next time you see a couple like that ask for their autograph because they must be famous, and if they aren't famous flip them a buck because they are most likey in need.

It has to do with our history. Most of the people coming to settle in America weren't wealthy. (Why would a wealthy person leave a place that's working out so well for him/her?) England at one point sent convicts here. Then slaves were brought. Throughout the country's history, poor immigrants have come to improve their lives. My point is that a culture created by poor people is not going to value dressing like rich people.
Also, dressing like a slob is more comfortable in my opinion.

I've seen it too and it's just sad that Americans have so little pride in themselves or their country. I personally dress nice all the time and wear clothing appropriate for the event...if I'm at the gym, I wear gym clothes, if I'm going out to eat, nice skirt and top that fit!

I think there's a bigger self-esteem problem here in the USA than in any other country. People just stop caring about how they look in their clothes when they are down on themselves. I am saddened when I see people walking down the street with ill-fitting clothes in the tourist town where I live. I believe there is a way to look neatly dressed even with a tight budget, i.e. yard sales, ebay, and well, ugh....thrift stores (my main reason for not going there is the smell and because they are a bit overpriced).

I think one of the beautiful things about being an American is our freedom. If you don't like what people are wearing maybe you should take over the country and start a fascist movement to get people to dress the way you want. Otherwise, enjoy your freedom while you have it!
