Check the TSA's website for a list of current restricted items. But people always try get by with oversized items like a guitar or sporting equipment. For years you could always carry on guitars and a flight attendant would store them in a closet if the overhead was full, but no longer are you allowed to do that. Anything over 22" in length or over a total of 45 linear inches (total of length+width+height) is not allowed. Nor are items over 40 lb. The FAA has been cracking down on what is allowed on board and what we can let slide by. If they catch a crew stowing or allowing a passenger onboard with an oversized item, the airline is fined $10,000 per offense. In all actuality we are supposed to send that passenger back to the ticket counter to check the item and as a result may miss their flight. All checked items have to be screened for bomb detection and acceptable gate claim items are only strollers and carseats or assistive devices such as wheel chairs and walkers.
Nail clipper ARE allowed in your carry on now and even small scissors like what you woud find in a manicure set were recently approved but the Flight Attendant's do not agree.
But yes there are the obvious...lighters, metal nail files, scissors, and yes even a stapler. One airports screeners may not check as closely as the others so you could potentially get through one airport and not another. I worked for an airline and know the rules and still go through with lighters in some places not even realizing i had them and not at others. You are however allowed 2 books of matches.

There used to be a restriction on fingernail clippers and nail files.. I am not sure whether that is true any longer. One thing you have to be careful of is that some very new or very diligent security person might say that hairspray or nail polish remover or even nail polish are considered extremely flammable and you can't take them on-board in your carry-on.

Scissors. I had to get rid of two sets. Knitting needles. Anything metallic, really.
Which is stupid because I can think of greater harm with a piece of string than a knitting needle

I once had a staple puller taken away by the security Nazis, I mean helpful and reassuring TSA agents.
Apparently it was OK to fly from Chicago to Memphis with it, but not from Memphis to Chicago.

your own Liquor, and devices that emit radio signals. like your wireless mouse. GPS devices are not. knitting needles are allowed, you can bring nail polish and remover on board, but not to use them (toxic fumes). Anything that gives off a strong odor.
Cameras and video recorders; you can bring them on but cannot record the crew at work.

Anything- and I mean ANYTHING sharp, like sissors, tweezers, eating utensils, etc. You can't talk on your cell, and you can't bring your own food (snacks maybe, but no meals, don't ask me why I have no idea.)
