I have changed my exercise routine to using the stair master, yoga and using the stationary bike. but when i run like i have 4 days a week for 5 years, my but and the back of my leg give me extreme pain. i first ignored this pain for about a year. now i can't run. I can't stand the pain. How do i fix this? will i ever run again? should i ask my other runners at the gym?

Ouch, I sympthasize with you. As a runner, I know what's like to go down.

It sounds like the pain could be your hamstring. I doubt it, because you have pain in the glutes.

You may want to do a search on "piriformis syndrome" and see if the symptoms match your own.

PS can be treated by stretching, anti-inflamatories and sitting on a tennis ball (or using it to massage the area).

I'd also suggest visiting a doctor or orthopedic guy for a full assessment.

You may also want to use http://www.coolrunning.com injury information area for further self-diagnosis.

Good luck.
