violin spider??? i would call someone for sure, who knows, violin spiders are more dangerous then black widows. don't mean to alarm you, but be careful!!

The Black Widow, you'll be glad to know, is a RECLUSE spider. It hides in seldom visited spots of the house, where it thinks it won't be bothered. The Brown Recluse is the same way. You RARELY see them out in the open. So, you want to wear long rubber gloves when digging in old clothes. In California, I discovered through Google, the type of spider you are thinking about, depends on the County you live in, because spiders are specific to weather conditions, in most cases. It is possibly a spider know as the Brown Recluse, and yes they are poisonous, they can cause bite areas not to heal, the area can become a gooey, pustulent area that oozes pus and requires an antibiotic cream to heal it. I know this because I was bitten by one once.

Your most accurate method is to call the local agricultural extension agent (check the phone book). They should be able to idenitfy the spider, and get you some information.
It does indeed sound like the wolf spider-

And to the question of it being a brown recluse- thank you for NOT panicking and buying into the hype. there are members of the recluse familly in Ca, but not the brown!

It is most likely the California Wolf spider. Three weeks ago i was bitten by a black widow spider and i became very ill and had to be hospitalized. The spider bite also triggered a bad case of shingles in my body....very very painfull too!!!

Could be a Wolf Spider...I ran into them all the time in Southern Califormia.
