EXCERSISE! If your dog is too tired to bark he will not bark. Shock collars are inhumane (IMHO) and often don't work, nor should you hit your dog with your hand or a newspaper. If your dog has been thoroughly excersised and s/he is still barking you can get a spray bottle filled with water and squirt the dog. It will not hurt him/her but will surprise them and usually quiet them for a little while. But really nothing beats a sleepy dog.

It's tough to answer this question without a bit more information. I'll try, though.

If he's barking for no apparent reason, he is probably bored and restless. He needs more exercise.

If he's barking at something in the neighborhood when he is in the yard, bring him in the house. You don't want to discourage him from barking at real threats, so don't hit him or yell at him for doing it.

If he's barking to go out, put him out.

If he's barking for attention, once again, he needs more exercise. Take him for a walk or throw a ball for him. He needs to be exercised every day or he will not be a nice pet. If you exercise him and he still barks indoors, spray him with a water bottle.

FYI, though, some breeds are just barky. If you've got one of those, there's not much you can do. Schnauzers, rat terriers, Jack Russells, beagles, chihuahuas, and probably a dozen others I've forgotten are notorious barkers.

Dogs usually make a commotion to get their master's attention.
Solution? Sit down in a quiet corner with your pet & by using a authoritative voice repeat the command, "Be Quiet" several times.
Dogs are also good at "reading" their master's body language/ tone of voice, so be sure to indicate to your pet that you're serious while adopting a stern stance.

In a non-high pitched voice tell your dog to "SSHHHHSH." While doing so, lift your hand up with your palm toward the dog. If he doesn't obey, go to him, kneel down to his level, gently grab his muzzle and say "SSHHHHSH," again with your free hand toward the dog, palm side toward the dog. Don't screech. You have to be the leader of your dog.

don't yell at it to shut up. Make a noise distraction - like throwing keys on the floor or something-to get the dog's attention and then tell it to come and give it praise. good boy!

Shot him!...lol..Just kidding, I love dogs. I trained mine in having a news paper rolled up and hit him in his nose, but that was when he was a pop, old dogs are harder to trained, but you can never loose by trying. GOOD LOCK

Train with a choke chain or an electronic anti barking device.

Buy a no bark collar and turn it up high enough to shock but not enough to hurt. They will think that any noise they make will caused them to get shocked.
