I am not sure what you will find historically about this quote, however, I know that back in the '50's it was a saying that many "southern" mothers would quote. The saying, as far as I know and heard my grandmothers and their friends talk about, means that if you 'dig deep into the lie a person obviously is telling, or has told, you will find that he/she is capable of, or has already stolen. " My mom would carry that statement further and even today, I find myself quoting it: " if you lie, you'll cheat, if you cheat, you'll steal..." I think that also falls into the same category. In a nutshell, if you are capable of lying, then there is nothing that you probably will not do. I hope this helps. It brought back memories.

It basically mean that if a person will lie to you they will steal from you. When a person lie to you they have stolen your trust.

I agree w/ above explanations. But, I think it's "liar" not "lie." And, I loved the movie "Ray."
