Yesterday I tried to save an injured downy woodpecker. I called agencies, etc.. Finally, after no one called me back I tried my best to help only to be criticized by 'rehabilators' later on. I don't drive because I'm epileptic and didn't have any transportation to drop the bird off. No one called me back right away, so I transported the bird on foot away from a group of boys that looked like they were getting ready to poke it with sticks and whatever else to a spot where I thought it would be safe. I know I didn't do the 'proper' thing, but I thought these agencies were suppose to care? Because most of the people I called NEVER returned my call!! And the two people who did, criticized me, I never got a thank you and that will make people not want to help--what do you think?

that's appalling! you are doing all you can and those whose job it is can't even answer a phone call?! and to critisize your efforts on top of it! there's gotta be some sort of watchdog agency for that! how awful, bt good for you. thank you for trying to help the poor creature!

The RSPCA in the UK is supposed to help when any animal is injured. However, they refuse to help smaller wild animals, especially birds. There are some people who set up individual charities and animal care projects and will take any injured animal but the money isn't always available. I've had to rescue birds on quite a few occasions, the last was a very shocked baby sparrow (not the most important creature in the world, but I think they all count) that fell out of its nest. After living in a box all day that I'd put holes in, I later stapled the box to a fence by some bushy trees and left it, and the bird was called by its parents and managed to fly off. The RSPCA would have just laughed in my face and told me to leave it to die or be eaten by a neighbourhood cat, even though our sparrows are under threat.

I purely got here across a wounded chicken a week in the past even as out on a morning workout walk with a buddy. The chicken became on the floor in the front of a few community shops. I went to a close by bakery and were given a container, positioned the chicken in it, presented the chicken homestead and called a ' wild animal rescue ' middle that factor-honored birds and took the chicken there. They instructed me the chicken turned right into a Starling. I called 2 days later and became instructed that the chicken seems therapeutic nicely and can want to be released back into the realm I had got here across him even as he became completely healed back. each and every residing element has the right to stay and merits care. This Starling has that is chance to proceed that is organic life. It brings me smiles deliberating him therapeutic and flying back.

that's insane! although not surprising! you'd find better places that would help on line than in your own town these days.
we have about 13 pecan trees in our yard, each about 30-40ft tall..very old trees. squirrels make nests HIGH up in the branches and on occasion a baby will fall from the nest. its a long fall, so sometimes they don't make it. but a lot actually do.
i try to keep my dogs in for a couple hours to see if the parents will come down and get it, but sometimes they don't...and i have to go get them.
the first time this happened...i called everyone i could find in the phone book. no one could tell me what to do, who to talk to...it was frustrating.
finally i starting calling vets..exotic animal vets, small animal vets, large animal vets....i got a hold of a vet office that had a vet tech that worked there, who took care of injured or abandoned baby squirrels.
i wrapped the cute little thing in a towel and rushed him in to her.

if it were not for everyday normal people, that just happen to know something about wild life, and have a kind heart...more of this world wonderful wild creatures would be forgotten. its a shame!!! and something MUST be done about it. we need a national, and international hot line that would help anyone that found injured wild life.

Nonetheless, you did the right thing. I thank you.

A friend from work had a very similar experience with an injured squirrel. He called and waited...only to be called hours later and criticized.

Some people are in the wrong professions out there.

baby Western Scrub Jay fell out of a tree.. so we went to the vet.. got a little tiny dropper and some baby bird formula.. and nurseed him till he was old enough to leave. Sad thing is he kept flying into the window all the time trying to get back into the house. Funny tho, we called him "joe bird" for whatever reason.

You know my dear, what do you care what people say, and the fact that they criticize you is shameful. I am saying thank you and it is people like you that make this world of ours a better place, people like you make our wild fauna and flora what it is today, and it is people like those that criticize all for what you do, that are supposed to be there for people that want to help but haven't the means. You know the world needs people like you so don't stop caring THANK YOU. And don't worry what those people say, don't get disheartened by what they say and don't give up, just remember you did what you thought you had to. You should report those agencies to the NSPCA

Yes, we have chickens roaming around our house because there is an open Field, and One day, I went out to let my dog do its business, and it starts running really fast, and it took me a while to get there, but it had caught a chicken, and I have chickens myself, so I knew a lot about these, but there is a farm like, 3 acres away and this chicken belonged to him ( he never thought of anything getting them because we sort of share a yard), so I got the chicken, locked the dod in the " fenced" area of our yard, and took care to the chicken. It was usually a golden color, but it was soaked with blood, and it took me about... I would say 5 months to have it cleaned and have it walk again... but it is blind, it does not have as much strength as it used to have, and it can only eat apple sauce, or anything meshed or stuff. The farmer let me keep her with my other chickens, and I still have her today, but what is weird, is the dog did the same thing to one of my other hens. Sad story...=(

You had good intentions, but it is part of the ecosystem. If it were a white tiger or an endangered animal, things would have been different.
