Wait till you're 18, move out, then get the dog. Sorry, but he's the boss.

It depends on how old you are. I am in that same situation. Try talking to your dad and find out why he does not like dogs. Then decide if you really need a dog at that exact moment. The age thing comes into play when you turn 18, you can get a dog and care for it in your backyard or do the grown up thing and move and then get a dog, that is what i plan on doing soon.

dogs are a big responsibility. They have to be kepted when you go on vacation. The food and vet bills cost a lot. The dog is first a puppy and chew things.
In the summer it is hot, and you have to make a cover, w/ plenty of water. IN the winter it is cold and they need a light to keep them warm.

So, you need an indoor dog,, so therefore,,you need someone who will be able to let them out,, until they are trained, or old enough to know to hold it.

You dad I am sure has his reasons, and I am sure I listed on them.
Sit down, and ask him why?
Is it that he thinks he will be the one feeding and watering it every day...because it is a job having a dog, and when my Boston was a puppy,,,,for the 1st month,,I felt like I had a new baby,,,I was up all night and busy all day w/ it.
It was a job!! I was exhausted. Then, we had to find someone to keep them while wer were gone!
So,,I think you should ask,, understand, and except his choice..he is the homeowner,, and when you get out of the house,,you will be able to get one..

Earn his trust. Assure your dad that you'll take full responsibility in caring for the dog(s).
Your dad is probably reluctant due to the pricey cost of upkeeping a pet i.e. grooming, pet home, food, medical care, etc.
To start get yourself a smaller sized pet like a Jack Russell Terrier or any breed that does not require much care. Beagles are fine choices as are Dacshunds.

do as he says.

or, try and talk him into a small dog.

find out WHY he says no.

if its due to shedding, and mess, tell him YOU will clean up after the dog, and make sure it goes in the yard and not the living room.

if its a money thing, tell him you can ADOPT a dog, you dont have to pay 500 bucks to buy a bred dog, when there are hundreds of dogs that are in need of your help at a shelter. and that YOU are willing to work off the money for vaccinations, spay/neuter, etc.

then, FOLLOW UP on your promises.

if YOU want the dog, then YOU need to do the work, and take care of it. if he does agree to let you have one, then you need to respect the fact that he did not NEED to get you a dog, and YOU OWE HIM now.

I guess u can't get a dog then. My dad hates animals! I mean he really HATES animals. My mom doesn't LOVE them but she let me have 2 dogs because we were moving to a new house and she promised I could get a dog. Try making a deal with your dad. Tell him that if u get straight A's on your report card, then ask if u can get a dog. It works with my dad. Or you can try making another deal similar to that one.

Get one when you move out. That's what I did.

If you talk him into it, get a small dog like a miniature poodle or a pug. They should be able to stay in the short fence.

I guess you can wait until you get your own house with its own fence and then get all the dogs you want. Sorry but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Volunteer at your local humane society. All those dogs have no one to love them. You could help the animals, feed your need for canine companionship, and make your dad proud of your for volunteering and maybe show that your are responsible enough to adopt one of your own!

my dad wouldnt let me get a dog cuz he said they shed too much, it's reallly expensive if they get sick, and they make the house stink. I had a talk with him and we discussed my grades and how responsible i could be with him. The important thing is to act as grown up as possible and bring up good points.
